And with the snow comes excess snow gear. We had a Christmas cookie tin acting as our hats, gloves, scarves, etc. holder, but it was overflowing and just not very cute. So we decided we needed a more attractive storage area where all of our snow gear would comfortably sit.

I absolutely love the way these came out, and it’s such a sigh of relief not having that eye-sore of a tin can just sitting by our front door overflowing with all of our winter accessories. Now it looks clean, tidy, and pretty. My kind of storage.

I started with these crates and baskets, both of which I got from Michaels.

Those baskets were 50% off and I’m obsessed with them. I think they’re so gorgeous.

After I had the supplies I needed from Michaels, I headed to Home Depot to pick out the stain I wanted. I originally was going to go with a brown, but then I thought that a nice shade of blue would be perfect. Especially because I plan on redoing our front room into an old Americana theme (spoiler alert). I decided on the Atlantic stain at Home Depot.

I applied three layers of stain to the crates and let them dry for about 48 hours. They came out perfectly–I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful colored stain.

Once dry, I had my handsome helper mount them to the wall using 4 drywall anchors for each crate. I wanted them to be really secure. I know right now they only house light accessories, but who knows what will be stored in there in the summer–plus our cats like to climb on everything and one of our cats is overweight, so I wanted to make sure the crates could hold him. Sorry Marshall.

Then I put in the baskets, and voila! Beautiful and efficient mudroom storage. Perfect for all your little accessories and items you need to grab on your way out the door!

Today we’ll be upcycling your old tin cans into pretty flower pots and hanging planters. Again, very easy to do and as always you can use fabric bits and pieces that you have lying around. If you’ve just made a quilt for a bedroom, you could make some pretty flower pots to match.

You don’t have to make pots out of your tins, you can use them as vases also.

Would you like to make some?

Here’s a guideline of things that you can use…

• fabric- I mainly used linen
• buttons
• paint
• string
• doilies
• pretty paper
• ribbon and lace
• ric rac

You will also need:-

• old tin cans that have been cleaned and dried
• paint brushes
• glue- or a hot glue gun
• drill- or hammer and a large nail (if you are making them hanging)
• scissors

To make your flower pot

1. Clean and dry your old tin. If you are painting your tin, paint it and leave to dry.

2. If making it a hanging flower pot, drill two holes on each side of the tin. If you don’t have a drill, or know someone that does, use a hammer and a very big nail and nail a hole on each side of the tin. Make sure you remove the nail!

3. Decorate! Use your imagination!

To make your flower pot

This is what I did for some of mine:-

– For the doiley pot– Paint the tin white. When dry, take a paper doiley and hold it in place, whilst you dab the pink paint onto the doiley (make sure you dab, and not stroke the paint on, otherwise your pattern won’t show). Remove the doiley and paint the rest of the tin pink. You can glue a button in the middle when dry.

– For the button pot– Paint a strip of white paint around the top of the tin, about 1/3 of the way down. When dry, use a hot glue gun and glue buttons all the way around the lower 2/3’s of the tin. Leave to dry.

–For the fabric pot– Take a strip of linen, measure it to make sure that it goes all the way around the tin. Fray the edges of the linen. Glue the strip of fabric into place with the hot glue gun. Wrap some string around the pot several times and secure into place with a bow. You can make a paper feather using an up and coming tutorial of mine.

Now all you need to do is find some pretty pot plants to put into your newly pimped tin cans, or a gorgeous bouquet of flowers.

A DIY Gigantic knit blanket is a fun and cozy project and a perfect Christmas gift that you can make with just a few materials and some patience.

Printed mugs:

You can print your own mugs and all you need is some permanent marker and write some lovely wordings and bake it in the oven and the mug is ready to be gifted.

Hot cocoa cones:

In addition to the mugs you can also gift them with small cones filled with hot cocoa, sweet puffs and semi sweet Chocó chips that they can mix in the mug and drink. Wouldn’t this make a great gift that they will love? This will be something unique and you can make it even in the last minute.

Homemade jam in a jar:

Who wouldn’t love home-made food? You can prepare some home made jam and fill it in the mason jar and give it away as a gift on the Christmas and this will cost you less and is a healthy option too.

Oven mittens:

You can get some oven mittens and give an extra touch to it by making use of colored and printed fabric from your home and sew it to the mittens. This will look unique and your friends will love it.

Wrapped pringles cans with Flowers:

Make use of old pringles cans by neatly wrapping them in gift wrappers and fill them with cookies or simply flowers, wrap it with ribbons if you want  and give away as a gift.

DIY kitchen towels:

This is a hand sewed kitchen towel that is made pretty and unique which was plain simple white, and all you need is some u fabric and you should know to sew.

Christmas Oven Mittens

1.  To get started you’ll need a pair of oven mittens-. Maybe you’ve had yours for awhile, and they just need a little “pick-me-up.”
2. Next I measured around the top of the mitten and cut my fabric TWICE as long, so that it would give room as I ruffled. I also cut the blue fabrics width 1/2 in bigger so you would be able to see it underneath.
3. Then I zig-zagged around both of my fabric strips so they wouldn’t fray.
4. Lastly, I put the smaller piece on top and sewed them together. Once they were sewn together, I put my ruffle foot on and ruffled the piece together.

   

5. Don’t forget to tuck your ends under and sew them so they don’t fray.

6. Once your ruffle strips are complete, press and iron them flat.

7. Since I don’t have a super fancy sewing machine, I didn’t want to attempt sewing the ruffle onto my oven mit. SO instead I used Fabric glue and glued the ruffle around the top. LOVE that stuff!

Now all I need is a matching apron! Wouldn’t these make a super cute gift?!

There are lots of awesome jars that you can pick up at your favorite thrift store and purchase some decorative papers, ribbons, bakers twine and flowers to decorate your jars.

You can also purchase some paints with different colors to color the lid to match the room but it is not recommended.  Here are jar decorative ideas to make your room look unique and lively.

Using the decorative papers, you can cut circles or other shape larger than the lids. Some prefer colors that are very striking to attract the attention of others. One helpful idea is to use a yellow paper and place it on the lid along the outer edge.

You can also use a mod Podge to shape the paper on the lid. Cover the upper part of the lid and the paper using a gooey substance. If you let the paper to soak up a little then it is easy to wrap things around. Make sure that it holds perfectly on the lid and let it dry.

Remove the extra paper off enough to cover under the lid, don’t leave too much or it can affect the tightening on the jar. Applied the Mod Padge to the outer area of the lid to protect the paper.

I’ve recently moved into my own own house and started doing DIY’s that I’ve always wanted to do. I lived with two boys before who were happy with the way the house was so now that I have creative reign I’m really going for it! My pinterest board is full of stuff I’m dying to try out. So the first thing I tried was these dead cute twigs with coloured string wrapped round them. As you can imagine it was dead easy to make these, but they add color to my beige walls and I’m so proud of myself LOL!
